Traffic Enforcement
- Traffic Studies conducted by the Ohio Department of Transportation and private entities with a focus on School Zones and Village Square.
- Directed Patrols in areas determined to be problem spots.
- Collaboration with the Ohio State Highway Patrol with School Zone safety and traffic crash reporting.
Community Outreach
- Youth: 4H SPIN Club Step Forward Program and Junior Neighborhood Watch Program.
- Adult: Village Parks and Transient Citizen Awareness and Blessing Boxes.

A unique unit is under development where the Somerset Police Department and the New Lexington Police Department will combine resources to combat Drugs and Violent Crime. Policies and Mutual Aid Agreements have been drafted and advanced training has taken place.
- Two Officers were trained in covert operations by the Central Ohio Drug Enforcement Task Force.
- Six Operators graduated from Basic SWAT School.
- Three Operators graduated from Advanced SWAT School where six agencies representing five Ohio counties attended. Our JSOT Operators took home individual honors and were members of the winning squad for the School’s Team Competition.
- Chief Schons completed the Ohio Tactical Officer Association Tactical Team Leader Course, and Active Attack Integrated Response Training Course. He attended the Ohio Corrections and Law Enforcement Security Threat Group Conference, and Advanced SWAT School.
- The Somerset Police Department and the New Lexington Police Department are members of the Central Ohio Drug Enforcement Task Force and collaborate with the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center and the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System.

- At the Somerset Police Department, a new Records Section System Index has been constructed, and the Property Room is in the final stages of being brought online with industry best practices.
- The Somerset Police Department is the first law enforcement agency to be a member of the Perry Housing Coalition.
- The Somerset Police Department became a charter member of the Perry County Juvenile Court Steering Committee, for the U-Turn Program.
- Because of the Department's involvement with Community and Youth Outreach, Chief Schons was nominated by the Perry County Juvenile Court to fill a vacancy on the Board of Trustees for the Multi-County Juvenile Detention Center.
